Illumination I

During 2005 I was formally invited to place one of my works on the grounds of the Rothko Chapel. I am deeply grateful to have this opportunity to participate in the chapel’s legacy, one that places art at the threshold of the chapel’s quest to advance human rights. For the last two years I have been involved with the chapel and the progress of this project, which includes the creation of my installation “Illumination I” as well as a video and a large body of preparatory works; video, photography, sketches, drawings, models and a like. The sculpture is a derivation of light flowing through a virtual ruins created from news photos of mosques that have been compromised in war torn Iraq. The sculpture was finally built in Napa California from fiberglass, lime cement and pulverized marble.

I have shared this exciting event with many people. These collaborations and the many friendships that have matured as a result have touched me genuinely and helped me to grow in ways that I could never have imagined. I invite you to explore the material posted here, as a way of sharing with all of us who have contributed to this wonderful project, in the hope that it will somehow touch you as well.
