My Query series was created as an experiment in how new media technology can explore problems set by previous generations of artists that I felt are still meaningful today. The whole subject of how our perception of space affects our consciousness has been with us since Kant. Obviously the computer and other powerful digital technologies have a huge impact on this issue.View image gallery of Nude Descending
By re-working such an important image as Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2)”, a modern icon, then reflecting it against Richter’s version, one is able to chart the changes in our collective perceptions over the course of the twentieth century. My addendum to all this and homage to two great artists I very much admire is my Query series, in particular the video from this body of work, which ultimately translates the time it takes the model to descend the stairs into animated pure geometry – something only possible today. It is my guess that somehow this represents the ghost in the machine and would have really intrigued Duchamp to see the spiritual dimension his great work implies translated into a real manifestation.
