During the spring of 1984, long before the advent of computers and photoshop, Somoroff set up a studio in Portugal where he created this group of photographs. All of the images were created “in camera” through the use of multiple exposure and "in camera" mattes. The idea was to create a symbolic story of the beginning of the world, through pure photographic abstract expressionism, relying on un-manipulated photography.
As the son of one of the most important American Still Life photographers of the twentieth century, Ben Somoroff; Michael Somoroff enjoys the privilege of having grown up in his father’s studio among many of photography’s giants. He has practiced the science and art of still life photography for more than a half century. This portfolio is a general presentation of still life images many of which have become cultural landmark imagery.
